Minutes:

Application Number:  AWDM/1258/19

Site:

Marquis of Granby PH, West Street, Sompting

Proposal:

Proposed new single storey wedding/function room in rear beer gardens. (Resubmission of AWDM/0461/19)

The application was deferred from the last meeting to allow the applicant the opportunity to address the Committee.

The Planning Services Manager advised the report was identical to the one considered at the previous Committee meeting in December.  However, the Officer outlined the application again, showing various plans and photographs, for the benefit of the two new Committee Members, Councillors David Balfe and Joss Loader.

The Officer’s recommendation was for approval.

Two Members raised queries with the Officer on the presentation.  One question was in relation to the length of time the marquee had been in use before it had blown down.  The Officer advised the marquee had been in place for 12 years.  The other query was in relation to fire exits, to which the Officer responded that the matter would be covered by building regulations which the applicant would have applied for separately.

There were further representations from:

Objectors:       Tony Hazell

                        Anthony Debono

Ward Cllr:        Councillor George Barton

Supporter:       David Wilbor

Despite favourable consultee responses, the Members were concerned the proposal would have a detrimental effect on the Conservation Area, Local Green Gap and nearby residential properties and therefore unanimously agreed to refuse the application.

Decision

The Officer’s recommendation to grant permission was overturned.

The planning application was REFUSED on the grounds that the building would have an adverse impact upon the Conservation Area, Local Green Gap and nearby residential properties.
