Worthing Cabinet Member for Regeneration: I authorise the award of the NEC Term Service Contract to JT Mackleys & Co Ltd.
The Adur Cabinet Member for Regeneration has agreed to abstain from this decision as a Worthing matter.
The Worthing Pier is one of the major attractions of our town. I have been briefed by our Technical Services department and read the recommendations of the most recent inspection report relating to the Pier’s Landing stage, which suggests that 5 timber piles are in a very poor condition and should be replaced within the next 5 years and 30 timber piles are in a poor condition and should be monitored for future deterioration over a similar period. The report has also indicated that a number of diagonal and horizontal timber struts are in very poor condition and require replacing within the same period.
The orientation of the structure and the individual locations of the piles that are in a poor condition mean that these piles cannot be replaced without substantial dismantling of the Landing stage to gain access to the inner and intermediate piles. It makes good economic sense therefore to phase the works around the specific areas that encompasses both the very poor and poor elements of the structure to prevent any abortive works and save on mobilisation costs of specialist equipment.
Two alternative options were considered. These consisted of doing nothing and a minimum scheme to maintain viability.
