After identifying several pieces of end-of-life infrastructure in the Town Hall Data Centre rooms and communications racks, we have worked with our incumbent supplier of Data Centre services, Powerworks, who will now supply:
A replacement Fire Suppression System
A replacement Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)
Replacement rack Power Distribution Units (PDU)
Communication Rack UPS (5)
Total - £75,615.00
The procurement will be funded using approved 2023-2024 capital budgets.
The decision to replace this infrastructure is imperative to ensuring the continuous operation of digital services at the Town Hall. Furthermore, it aligns with regulatory requirements, particularly replacing the Fire Suppression System, which has surpassed its 10-year lifespan. While the Data Centre UPS has also exceeded its supportable life, its good condition and regular maintenance have allowed us to extend its operational life to the maximum feasible extent.
Similarly, the need to replace PDU strips and the small communication rack UPS units arises from their outdated status and the emergence of operational issues, resulting in intermittent service disruptions in recent times.
Our Data Centre facilities are pivotal in delivering resilient digital services, necessitating periodic updates. Powerworks was selected for this project due to its longstanding track record in maintaining and supporting our Data Centres over several years, making them a trusted and valued service provider upon which our digital operations depend.
The option considered was to explore alternative suppliers for the replacement infrastructure. However, after conducting a supplier evaluation, it was determined that Powerworks, our incumbent supplier, offered several advantages:
Familiarity with Our Infrastructure: Powerworks has a deep understanding of our existing infrastructure, having supported our Data Centres for several years. This familiarity reduces the risk of compatibility issues and ensures a smoother transition.
Proven Track Record: Powerworks has consistently provided reliable service and maintenance to our Data Centres. Their track record and relationship with our organisation make them a trusted partner.
Cost-Effective Solution: Despite considering alternative suppliers, it was found that Powerworks offered a competitive pricing structure, ensuring cost-effectiveness without compromising quality.
After careful consideration of the alternative options, it is evident that the decision to proceed with Powerworks for the replacement of the Fire Suppression System, Data Centre UPS, PDU strips, and communication rack UPS units is the most prudent course of action. This decision aligns with our commitment to safety, regulatory compliance, and the uninterrupted provision of digital services, while also capitalising on our positive history with Powerworks as a dependable service provider.
